I'm not even going to try to jump around it: when I finished episode 5 of the first season of The Book of Boba Fett, I was jumping around, giggling, and swailing my arms like a little kid.
Warning: this post contains SPOILERS for The Book of Boba Fett, season 1, episode 5
Last episode finished off teasing Mando through the music. When I heard this I was already excited as hell, and could not wait to watch the next episode. Luckily, I was binging the show and catching up, so I could watch it right away!
Turns out: the entire episode was basically an episode of The Mandalorian! I love Mando, so no complaints from me.
Halfway through the episode, I was not entirely convinced of its greatness. Mando dueling to keep the Darksaber had me questioning if they would cheat their way out of Mando wielding it in a single episode — but luckily not! Mando was quickly cast aside by his cult after it was revealed he took off his helmet, which I thought was interesting. To stick to your values, even when your numbers are so few, was interesting. Especially after he sacrificed his spear.
I also liked that Mando did not immediately know how to wield the Darksaber, even injuring himself. It makes more sense than instantly flailing it around without error like Luke did in A New Hope.
Now, this is starships.me, not starwars.me… And that's what we're here for! As I said, I was not entirely sold on the episode until we got Tatooine.
First of all, I thought it was interesting that they showed that commercial travel exists in the Star Wars universe, I can't think of this happening any other time in the universe, but it makes total sense for civilians to use this mode of transport over everyone having a personal spaceship, especially on a planet like Tatooine. I liked that it had the security check with security being annoying, just like IRL. It even had the little kid peering over, which I thought was great.
When Mando arrived, I expected him to be instantly approached by Fennec. This was not the case. Instead, Mando went to visit Peli Motto. They spoke about him wanting a replacement for the Razor Crest. As you know, I LOVE the Razor Crest. I figured "replacement" meant they were looking for a ship like the Razor Crest: mostly independent from things like hyperdrive docking rings, with some space for storage and sleeping quarters.
Instead, Peli showed Mando an unfinished N1 Starfighter. My reaction was essentially the same as Mando's: oh boy.
I'm not usually a fan of N1s, so Peli trying to sell Mando an unfinished one which isn't remotely like the Razor Crest (such as: the lack of storage, living spaces) had me hoping Mando would turn her down and wait for another ship while Mando would go to visit Boba.
Instead, we got something that was FAR superior to my hope: they BUILT the ship together. A SHIP BUILDING SCENE IN STAR WARS!!!! I was beyond excited when they were building the ship, even if it was an N1.
Part of my reason for disliking the N1 is usually its looks: it just looks far too flashy for my liking, especially for a fighter, where you'd rather not be as visible as you could possibly be. However, this episode switched that up entirely. It gave the Starfighter a whole new look, sporting a fantastic gray, looking metal as hell.
I like this look a lot more than the usual N1 look, where it's yellow and "sleek". I love the gray and metal look, with the engine sticking out in front.
I've already made it clear how much more I like this new look over the conventional look, but I must confess: I still was not entirely sold on the idea of Mando flying an N1. When Mando jumped in, I kind of expected the helmet to be too bulky and the cabin being unable to close. No such thing occured. Instead, we got one of the greatest scenes in all of Star Wars: Mando testing the limits of the new N1: flying around over the city, people looking up like they would during an airshow, Mando flying between rocks, flying through the clouds, and even going to visit the commercial flight he himself was on earlier to visit the kid.
We also got some beauty shots of the ship as it flies along 2 X-wings — AWESOME!
I also liked the shots of the X-wings. It was nice to see one with blue streaks, when red is the more common option to use in Star Wars.
It was fantastic seeing any starship move around like that, they gave it such a great feeling of speed. I'm not sure I've ever seen any starship action on TV or in movies I've loved more.
I have been converted from someone who was really not a fan of the N1 to someone who's extremely excited to see the gray and blue version in action more — this ought to be fantastic, and I can't wait for the next episode!
I thought the controls were interesting as well — I'm not sure we've ever seen the controls of the N1 before, but Mando has 2 seperate handles in his hands, likely tugging on each side to steer, which buttons for other functionality. This looks dope as hell.
